Secrets, shame and Sisterhood: Siobhan’s Holistic Healing Journey Through Endometriosis
Siobhan, known as Free Thyself, is a holistic womb facilitator whose work is grounded in empowering individuals through natural healing and self-discovery. Her journey, marked by resilience and the pursuit of holistic wellness, is deeply intertwined with her personal experiences, particularly her struggle with endometriosis.
“They told me I was infertile and there was nothing they could do,”
Siobhan’s battle with endometriosis began with excruciating symptoms that led her to seek medical help. However, the dismissive attitudes she encountered in hospitals left her feeling like just another number. “They told me I was infertile and there was nothing they could really do,” she recalls. Doctors proposed invasive procedures, but after losing her test results and offering little clarity about her condition, Siobhan began questioning their competence. She realized that the medical system lacked substantial research on endometriosis, and she couldn’t entrust her health to a system that seemed uncertain itself.
Determined to take control of her healing, Siobhan turned to YouTube and discovered a community of women sharing similar experiences. Many had turned to holistic approaches, reporting improvements in their symptoms. This marked the beginning of Siobhan’s journey into holistic healing.
"There had to be another way to address my pain and take control of my healing," she reflected, marking the start of her holistic journey.
Through extensive research, Siobhan adopted lifestyle changes that significantly lessened her symptoms. She transitioned to a vegan diet, eliminated foods containing estrogen, and avoided harsh chemicals like bleach. She also explored yoga, which became a transformative part of her healing journey.
One yoga class, in particular, was led by a woman who introduced Siobhan to the concept of intentional breathing. “The breathwork was a game changer,” Siobhan says. Yoga not only eased her physical pain but also helped her release emotional tension stored in her body. The women’s circles during these sessions provided her with a sense of community and validation, showing her the power of collective healing.
"I was holding onto family secrets and the pain of sexual abuse, and I realized that these unspoken traumas were manifesting in my body and preventing me from truly healing"
As Siobhan explored the emotional roots of her condition, she began confronting long-held anger and shame stemming from her childhood. She opened up about the family secrets she carried and the impact of sexual abuse she had endured. “So much of that shame wasn’t even mine,” she reflects. These unspoken traumas, compounded by societal conditioning, manifested in her body as physical pain and illness.
Her healing journey required her to address these deeply buried wounds. By acknowledging her pain and giving herself permission to release it, she found the courage to reclaim her narrative and begin the process of emotional and spiritual healing.
Siobhan struggled to feel safe in the presence of women. “I never felt like I had a safe space with them,”
However, during a women’s circle at one of her yoga sessions, she encountered a profound moment of healing. Surrounded by supportive women in a nurturing environment, her body responded in an extraordinary way—a cyst ruptured.
“It was painful, but it felt like my body was finally letting go,” she explains. This moment symbolized a release of not just physical tension but also years of emotional and relational trauma. For Siobhan, it underscored the importance of creating safe, judgment-free spaces where women can heal together.
As Siobhan delved deeper, she realized that healing was not just physical but also emotional and spiritual. She began addressing the anger and shame she carried, much of which stemmed from societal conditioning. “I wasn’t speaking my truth,” she reflects, connecting this to the throat chakra and the sacral chakra. She learned that these energy centers are deeply intertwined, and that unspoken emotions could manifest as physical ailments.
